From the GetYourGuide and Viator product pages, checked on 22 October 2026. The length of the whole trip is the operator’s figure.
The format decides more than the operator: who holds the rod, how many people share the boat, and if the fish is eaten on board or goes home with you.
Half-day and two-hour trips from the quay in the centre, with suits handed out on board. The catch usually goes into a soup or onto flatbread.
Only your group on board, from Skattøra Marina, with the export papers for the fish you keep.
The crew pulls up the crab pots with your help, and the crab is cooked on board. Boats range from six guests to a classic explorer vessel.
A day out of town on a frozen sea fjord or a mountain lake, with transport, warm clothing and food from the fire on most trips.
An evening on the wooden boat Hermes II in the light nights of summer, or fishing from the shore on Kvaløya with a campfire.
Reviews from fjord boats, crab boats, a private boat and the ice, including the critical ones. The complaints are mostly about rods shared in turns, fishing time shorter than the trip and a taste of king crab rather than a whole one. Those points are part of how the trips work, so this site shows them first.
“I thought it was great. First of all, we caught a big fish within a few minutes. Secondly, they took us to different fishing spots so that everyone could have the experience of catching a fish. The coffee, chocolate and other snacks were unlimited, and the fish soup was made with freshly caught fish and was delicious.”
“Fishing trip on Hermes II was absolutely fantastic. […] The rain didn't lessen the thrill when our 9-year old grandson pulled in 12-pound cods, twice! […] Part way through we were served hot fishcakes that hit the spot. Hot blackcurrant toddy kept us warm on the inside. And the fish we caught was cleaned on deck and boiled for a true fisherman's lunch.”
“The guides were super friendly and helpful. But you'd expect there to be a sonar on board to find fish, so you don't spend 2 hours fishing unsuccessfully in the murky water. The repeated changes of location didn't help either […] The time of 2-3 hours is also incorrect, as the next tour started exactly 2 hours later and you had to be back on time. Too bad, it would have been a nice trip otherwise.”
“Truly once in a lifetime experience! The trip was well organized with very friendly captain and crew plus comfortable facilities onboard (toilets, seatings, hot beverages). We were lucky to catch 8 kinh crabs in a single pot and had a chance to get involved in the process (pulling the pots, handling the crab, preparing them for cooking) […]”
“[…] Bear in mind though this is not a charter, for the crabbing/fishing enthusiasts that are used to hauling many pots this is not the case. You pull 1 pot due to the time required and safety. The guides are awesome and include everyone in the experience which is great. We were lucky and got 2 king crab among other things that were thrown back. […] Warm suits provided, vessel was great, felt totally safe and well organised.”
“The crew's service was excellent; they were very friendly. However, I didn't think it was right that we had to split two fishing rods between six people. If I book a fishing tour, it's so I can fish the entire time, not just for a short while. Also, the spots the captain indicated didn't show any animals on the fish finder.”
“Great! We caught five cod weighing about 3 kg each and a 76 kg halibut, which kept us busy for quite a while until we finally reeled it in. After the photo shoot, we released it safely.”
“For the cost, it scarcely met the description. Guests get to ride the fishing boat yet participation of “self-captured lunch”(ie king crab) was close to none. Guests took turn to hold a king crab and had photo shots yet that was not the one served on the table. […] each guest was served 2-3 legs. If you prefer a “fisherman” experience, this tour probably fits the definition.”
“We had a great day with Jorgen snowshoeing and ice fishing! We managed to catch a trout and the kids had a great time learning how to fish. Jorgen can tailor this activity to suit your group (if it’s a private one you booked) […] We had a lovely camp fire and lunch in beautiful surroundings.”

This site lists the bookable fishing, king crab and ice fishing trips from Tromsø with boat, group, rods and what happens to the catch, taken from the product pages. When you book through a link on this page, GetYourGuide or Viator pays us a small commission out of their margin; your ticket price stays the same.
Start with what you want to do with the day. The fjord boats from the city quay are the simple choice: a few hours on the water, thermal suits, and the catch cooked on board. Hermes II is an old wooden boat where the rods go round in turns. A private boat gives your group the rods to itself and the export papers to take fish home. King crab tours are about hauling pots and eating the crab, not about rod fishing. Ice fishing is a winter day trip out of town.
No operator promises it, and several say so on their product pages. On most boat trips the catch is shared and cooked on board, so one good bite feeds several people. On the two-hour trip with Polar Adventures there is only a meal if somebody catches something.
On the shared boats the fish is usually eaten on board; Polar Adventures prepares fillets to take home only after a very good catch. Taking fish out of Norway is limited: according to Norwegian Customs, from 1 January 2026 each person aged 12 or over may export 15 kg of fish, up to twice per calendar year, and from 1 January 2027 the limit is 10 kg. The quota applies to fish caught through a registered tourist fishing business, with a personal document from that business. Tromso Explorer includes those export papers on its private trips.
Not for sea fishing. Visit Norway states that no permit or licence is needed for deep sea fishing or for fishing from the shore. The Directorate of Fisheries asks you to use handheld tackle only, to respect the minimum sizes, and it is illegal to sell your catch. Lakes and rivers are different: freshwater fishing in Norway needs a licence, so on a lake trip ask the operator whether it is arranged.
Not as a tourist fishing on your own. The Directorate of Fisheries states that tourists may not take part directly in catching king crab. On the tours from Tromsø the crew owns the pots, and you help bait and haul them. The crab is cooked and eaten on board, not taken home.
Colder than on land once the boat is moving. Most fishing boats hand out thermal or insulated suits; the private boats provide flotation suits. Hermes II has a heated saloon, and the Arctic Sea Adventures crab boat has a heated cabin for breaks.
Only while the water is frozen, so in the second half of winter. Skadi Adventures gives 5 January to 31 March for its trips on the sea fjord in Ullsfjord, and GuideGunnar runs its lake trips on Ringvassøya from February to April. The Ramfjord trip with Hello Tromsø names no months; it depends on the fjord freezing.
Yes, on the evening trip of Hermes II. According to Visit Tromsø, the midnight sun can be seen on those evenings from 18 May to 25 July if the weather allows.
